Youth and Suicide in American Cinema: Context, Causes, and Consequences

From the early 20th century through to 2017, the portrayal of suicide in films by, about, and for youth has been uneven. Some representations are more nuanced than others; while they may reflect common patterns about suicide, they convey contradictory and troubling messages. My analysis uncovers the causes of suicide as portrayed in these films. It also reveals how the messages about suicide tend to be controversial and dichotomous; what is more, the pain inflicted on loved ones by the suicide is rarely discussed. These findings are particularly important, since suicide is the second leading cause of death among young people and suicide rates are at an all-time high. In light of the concerns over the negative effects that media messages about suicide can have on vulnerable teen audiences, I offer a proactive approach for young audiences and advocate for empowering them with a targeted media literacy strategy.
